A radiant look is one that’s bright, as if illuminated from within. Perhaps inspired by that inner light that healthy, happy and vibrant people seem to possess, an increasingly popular technology actually harnesses light energy to rejuvenate facial skin.
Called Intense Pulse Light (IPL) or photofacial, this procedure involves directing highly focused broadband light rays past the skin’s visible top layer, the epidermis, into the skin’s deeper dermal beneath the epidermis. These light rays pulse repeatedly, causing collagen and blood vessels to constrict. As a result:
- Facial redness caused by broken capillaries, rosacea and hyperpigmentation is diminished;
- Benign brown pigments and discolorations caused by sun exposure, smoking, alcohol use or hormonal changes fade;
- Acne is reduced and resulting acne scars are minimized;
- Fine lines and wrinkles vanish;
- Pore size is reduced and skin texture is improved.
IPL also stimulates the body’s natural production of collagen, a bio-protein that provides structural support to your skin, lending volume and smoothing wrinkles. Treatment sessions are completed in about 30 minute and most patients undergo three to five photofacial sessions, spaced four weeks apart, to achieve the best results. IPL treatment isn’t painful, but you may feel a sensation similar to a rubber band snap on your skin’s surface. And there’s no downtime for healing, you’ll likely have sunburn-like redness for a few days.
Photofacials are effective for most skin types, though naturally dark or deeply tanned skin may hinder treatment. Patients who have successfully undergone a series of IPL treatments and properly cared for their skin afterward report gradual improvement in their skin’s condition in the weeks following treatment. In fact, in consumer surveys on the review site MakeupAlley.com, 100 percent of users posting reviews said they would choose IPL treatment again. Results are long-lasting, but to maintain that collagen growth boost, we recommend patients undergo an additional treatment once every six to 12 months.
